[Strategic Collaborations (1)](https://promos.steelandtube.co.nz/tag/strategic-collaborations) - Case Studies - Company News - Featured - - - Written by Steel & Tube on October 21, 2026 The starting point for this new build in Wairarapa was a generous 7,950m² site and a brief for a substantial multigenerational home. It needed to accommodate the ebb and flow of everyday life, balancing spaces for gathering and entertaining with opportunities for privacy and retreat.  For Sam Hodgson, Director of [Modal Homes Architecture](https://www.modal.archi/), that brief naturally led to a three-wing arrangement. Rather than presenting as a single built form, the home unfolds as a sequence of distinct yet connected spaces, each tailored to a different aspect of family life. The western wing embraces recreation, incorporating the garage, games room and bar, while extending naturally to the outdoor entertaining areas. The centre forms the social heart of the dwelling, bringing family and guests together around a series of interconnected living and dining spaces. Modal Homes’s response was to emphasise length rather than height, keeping the eastern and western wings deliberately low with shallow-pitched truss roofs that allow the building to sit more comfortably across the site.    ## One Material Language That roof geometry became an important part of the material selection.  Steel & Tube [ST7®](https://steelandtube.co.nz/specifiers/st7) 0.55 in Ebony Maxx was specified across the roofing and selected areas of wall cladding, alongside flashings and selected fasteners. The profile suited the low-pitched roof forms Modal Homes wanted to achieve, while its ability to continue onto the walls offered a way to visually connect the architecture. Traditionally associated with commercial buildings for its long-spanning capability and wide effective cover, ST7® takes on a different character in a residential setting. Its strong, defined lines lend themselves to contemporary architecture, giving Orui a bold, crisp exterior while retaining the practical performance the profile is known for. A great example of a traditionally commercial roofing profile finding a natural place in a residential setting. ![Render ST7 Orui Home wellington 2026 1](https://promos.steelandtube.co.nz/hs-fs/hubfs/Render%20ST7%20Orui%20Home%20wellington%202026%201.jpg?width=770&height=433&name=Render%20ST7%20Orui%20Home%20wellington%202026%201.jpg) “We wanted a simple and consistent material language across the house, so using the same profile for both the roofing and cladding helped us achieve that continuity,” says Sam.  The effect is particularly evident from the pool and primary living areas, where the dark ST7® surfaces continue from roof to wall rather than stopping at the eaves. This uninterrupted treatment helps the three wings read as a single composition.  “Rather than introducing materials for the sake of variety, we looked for opportunities to use a smaller number of materials well and allow the form of the architecture to do more of the work.”  The result is an exterior that feels far simpler than the programme it contains. “There is a lot happening within Orui, but the architecture does not need to announce every individual function externally,” says Sam. “The low roof forms and consistent material language give the house a calmness and simplicity that belies the complexity of the spaces underneath.” That balance is also what Sam is most proud of.
